Boosting Facebook ads may seem daunting at first.  But, like everything, there are guidelines to follow on what you should promote, when and how.  Boosting Facebook ads can be a very useful and inexpensive tool for social media marketing.

Boosting Facebook Ads

Advertising on Facebook is the easiest way to start advertising on social media.  You must have administrator privilegdes for the specific page.  As a page admin you can view insights of your posts to see how they’re doing organically.  You can even view the post’s reach, interactions and impressions.

When Should You Boost a Facebook Ad?

You can technically boost ANY Facebook post originally published by your page.  However, to get the best return on your investment, I recommend you boost when the post:

  • Is visually appealing
  • Accurately represents your business
  • Is already performing well organically

How Much Should You Spend on Boosting Facebook Ads?

Because there are so many options, the amount you should spend is ultimately up to you.  Facebook is great because it has options for every budget; from a few dollars a day, to hundreds of dollars.  As a result I normally spend around $20 for 1-2 weeks for my small business. However for a really good post, I may increase that to $40 for the same time period.

Settings for Boosting Facebook Ads

There are a few settings you can change to select your target market.  I generally set mine to the following:

  • Age range: 25-65
  • Location: Newmarket, Aurora, Keswick, Uxbridge, Barrie, Richmond Hill, etc. (within 25 miles is the standard range)
  • Audience: People who like my page and their friends; or anyone within the defined locations

How Do You Know If Boosting Is Working?

It’s a good idea to check the status of your boosted ad throughout the campaign.  You can even pause, edit, and restart the campaign.  Look for the number of people reached, impressions made, interactions – likes, comments, shares – and new people liking your business page.  You can really tell that your ads are working when you start to see new people liking your page.  Trust me, this can be exciting!

How Does Facebook Boosting Billing Work?

This is the only thing I’m not crazy about with Facebook Ads.  Facebook’s support forum says that:

When you’re charged depends on the currency and payment method you’re using to pay for ads”.

It also depends if your account has a billing threshold. Click here for Facebook’s ad billing information page.

Facebook may not charge you right away if their billing threshold isn’t met. The first payment may get lumped together with another boosted post charge, resulting in a larger lump payment.

Final Verdict

Boosting Facebooks ads is a great way to reach and engage new followers.  Since it’s an inexpensive advertising option, you can try it out and see what techniques work best for you and your business.
